The prestigious 250 million dollar Liberty National Golf Club is located in Jersey City, New Jersey. The surroundings of the golf course cannot be ignored, with the beautiful Statue of Liberty to the east, signaling the promise of new beginnings. Owner Paul Fireman, former CEO of Reebok, had exactly that in mind when creating the course and often said, “I think golf is a code of conduct, a way of life, and a tremendous character builder.”
The site of Liberty National has a layered history. It has been used as an oil refinery, an industrial goods warehouse, and as a prisoner war camp in World War II. Converting the land into a luxurious golf course was no easy task. In 1992, World Golf Hall of Famer, Tom Kite, saw an aerial shot of where the golf course would sit and his reaction was instantaneous, “Darn right I’m interested,” he said. Kite quickly called upon his friend and co-designer, Bob Cupp and began the process of creating the golf course with financial assistance from Paul Fireman and his son Dan Fireman. Dan ensured, “this wasn’t a business play, we wanted to give a gift to the world of golf.”
18 holes stretch over 7400 yards of land and Belgian cart-path stones are laid between greens. You can get to the course by driving, taking a ferry from NYC and some members even fly in on helicopters. Liberty National has both a helipad and ferry services to accommodate members. The 60 million dollar, 57,000-square-foot shimmering clubhouse sits overlooking the 18th hole. The clubhouse was said to be inspired by the Sydney Opera House with floor to ceiling windows. Fun fact: there are inspirational quotes by Teddy Roosevelt placed throughout the walls of the spa. “It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed,” is one of the quotes among them.
Liberty National is a par 71 course and is planted with A4 grass which is the finest grass you can get. Players are asked to wash their shoes before they step foot on the course. The 14th hole, a par 3, is said to be their signature hole, with clear views of the New York City Skyline, the Verrazano bridge and of course Lady Liberty herself.
The Barclays Tournament was held at Liberty National in both 2009 and 2013 and will host the 2017 Presidents Cup. It is the 4th golf club to host the Presidents Cup in the United States.
